RURAL TOURISM KEEPS ON GROWING IN SPAIN
It is a thriving sector with annual increases of 20%. The offer of regulated houses rose to 4,800 in the year 2000 with an offer of more than 24,000 accommodation spaces. Catalonia, Castile and Leon and Aragon are the regions with the greatest number of lodgings.
The largest groups which participate in rural tourism come from the large cities of Catalonia (24%), Madrid (23%), the Community of Valencia (16.3%), Andalusia (9.6%), and the Basque Country (10%).
Amongst the communities which are the recipients are: Andalusia (20%), Catalonia (12.2%) and Aragon (9.7%), followed by Castile and Leon, the Community of Valencia, Castile-La Mancha, Navarre and Asturias.
TYPICAL PROFILE OF THE TRAVELLER A young person who lives in a large city, Spanish in 95% of the cases and with motivations relating to family roots in the rural environment and to natural resources.
